A brief history of Bottrills
Robert Bottrill was considered a local leading light in the late 1800’s and throughout his time in the in the 20th century. Not only did he start Bottrills coal merchants and colliery agency, he took pride in keeping his fleet up to date using what was then ground-breaking technology.
During a Council meeting in June 1897, it was suggested that Chichester should have its own band to attend large functions in the city and the surrounding area. What is now known as the Chichester City Band was founded in 1897 by Mr. Robert Bottrill, a well-known coal merchant in Chichester and Bognor Regis.

Mr. Robert Bottrill, Coal Merchant, Contractor, and Colliery Agent, of Rugby House, Southgate, Chichester, writes:
“Herewith I have pleasure in sending a photograph of an engine with a load of inch cast-iron pipes, 12 feet long, which trust will be of service. I find I can run most in coal delivery, and more so cross-country districts, loading with coal to farmers, and loading back with with another full load.
We shall be at all times ready to undertake any kind of haulage, great or small, at moderate prices. I supervise the work myself, and, as matter of fact, when extra busy, I take my turn on the engine, so as to relieve my driver. I like driving very much, and take a keen interest in the engine.
I am very proud of my choice, because it has proved to be all that was represented. The Aveling is undoubtedly a first-class engine, and second to none. The workmanship is of a high order. Having completed six years’ apprenticeship and worked in some of the largest engineer shops in Birmingham, I have a little knowledge of what an engine should do, and this experience is a great help to me in my business.”

Parkers purchases Bottrills
Albert Parker (A E Parker – now Parkers of Chichester, and parent company to Bottrills Transport) purchased Bottrills in the mid 1970’s and continued to deliver coal throughout the region until the late 70’s when the company was made dormant and Parkers took over the transport. In 2018 Bottrills Transport Ltd was reformed and in 2019 became a shareholder member of the Pall-Ex Group.
